Description
A showcase of cutting edge Australian winemakers.
Because this is a mixed dozen, it has to be added to your cart in multiples of 12 bottles. This mixed dozen has been priced at $31.83 per bottle because $31.83 x 12 = $381.96 , which is the correct price to pay for it. This represents a discount of 10% from our usual $424.40 retail price.
There is one bottle each of all 12 wines. There are eight reds, two whites, one sparkling, and one rosé.
- Matt Atallah “Block 7” Syrah 2019 from Orange NSW. Hermitage-like fruit and spice combo, pure Syrah expression, pâté, compote, gunpowder smoke, mulchy strawberry note, while the palate is lithe and tight as a violin string despite its 14% abv, balanced, classy, juicy acidity, very light tannins, food-friendly and long. Usually $55.95 per bottle.
- Michael Hall Syrah 2019 from the Eden Valley SA. The corset on this wine was drawn in nice and tight with the buxom fruit bursting out at the seams, very dark fruit it is too with notes of blackberry jam, plums and tar, oak and smoke, while the palate is utterly eurocentric, highly strung with very firm and fine tannins, and juicy acidity. Demands food for this very cool climate style. Rated 97/100 in Decanter Magazine’s Top 10 Australian wines of 2022. Usually $55.95 per bottle.
- Rikard Pinot Noir 2021 from Orange NSW. Light colour density, slight haze and tawniness but outrageous aromatic expression, lifted, open, evolved and highly complex with strawberry jam fruit, pulpy and earthy, cream and wood, curry powder, leather. The palate is very fine, graceful, slight chewiness, juiciness, sappy and long. A Pinot of serious stature, worldly in its conception and very neat in the execution. Usually $46.95 per bottle.
- Warrabilla “Parola’s Limited Release” Durif 2015 from Rutherglen VIC. Australia’s most outrageous red wine. Bigger than Big Ben and broader than Broadway this drinks almost like a parody of all that is most excellent, famous, and extreme in Australian red wine with gregarious fruit and oak, and herculean body. Not for the faint hearted but a complete crowd pleaser and a fun wine to surprise friends with. If you haven’t already tried this Durif (AKA “Petit Syrah”) then you really need to be initiated into a classic ozzy cult wine. Usually $45.95 per bottle.
- Mosquito Hill Blanc de Blancs 2017 from the Fleurieu Peninsula SA. Benchmark Champagne style. Lemon tart and a flurry of toasty notes lay out the classic Blanc de Blancs aromatic canvas but the palate is off-the-chart in its vibrant bubbliness, very beautiful acidity, pushing the limits of jowel-pumping juiciness like only great Champagne should be able to do so this for a 6-year-old South Australian is mind-bogglingly excellent. Conservative but explosively good. Took top spot in the sparkling category in Winestate Magazine’s recent taste-off for the Fleurieu Peninsula and surrounds. Usually $36.95 per bottle.
- Topé “P+R” Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 from the Clare Valley SA. Completely unexpected Bordeaux-esque Cabernet profile, intense fruit but pared back and allowing the fresh minty/menthol leafiness to flutter free, light and elegant but very ripe and attractive too. The palate is all class, balanced, elegant and fresh with excellent tannin structure, poise and length. Outstanding Clare Cabernet from a classic cool year. Usually $32.95 per bottle.
- Mosquito Hill “Emeritus” Pinot Noir 2018 from the Fleurieu Peninsula SA. The fruit is lovely here, just tipping into secondary notes of leather, earth, and antique wood, but the cherry and cranberry fruit is kicking on hard, the oak still sexy yet mellow, but the greatness as always is on the palate where it’s sub-13% alcohol but so softly airbrushed by time and a deft winemaking hand, perfectly smooth and delightful to drink, light but assertively delicious. This is the heart and soul of what great Pinot Noir should be. Usually $31.95 per bottle.
- Mosquito Hill “Emeritus” Chardonnay 2018 from the Fleurieu Peninsula SA. In a blind tasting I’d be guessing this was Puligny-Montrachet for sure. The aromatics are ultra-savoury, hardly a skerrick of fruit, but the compensation is huge for any lover of Chardonnay’s uniquely stony and smoky maritime streak, just the faintest trace of oak, and then a palate that makes a laser beam look like a sputtering old candle: very tightly focused, flashing acidity, long and lime-y, graceful, pure and endless. An incredible Chardonnay still in its youth. Usually $31.95 per bottle.
- Brave Goose Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 from Central Victoria. Focused nose, blackberry jam, Licorice Allsorts, wood, cloves, roasted nuts, antique furniture, leather and polish, while the palate is medium-full, elegant, dry, lightly tannic, and very food-friendly. Usually $28.95 per bottle.
- Topé “100 Osmond” Riesling 2022 from the Clare Valley SA. Very pure/almost colourless, vibrant sherbet, lime, lemongrass, ginger and subtle notes of other spice, while the palate is dry, edgy, citrusy, long. Will make old bones. Drink now to 2030+. 11.5% Classic Clare Riesling. Usually $26.95 per bottle.
- Side Gate Tempranillo 2018 from the Adelaide Hills SA. Deep mellow fruit, dark and earthy, walnuts, mahogany, and spice, while the palate is balanced, medium-full bodied, smooth and dry. Won a Gold Medal at the Sydney Royal Show. Usually $18.95 per bottle
- Georgie Orbach Sangiovese rosé from the Riverina NSW. Deep colour, pink hinting at amber, subtle but interesting notes of caramel, sherbet, shortbread, and orange zest, while the palate is frisky, dry, and driven. A very serious little Sangiovese rosé with flavour, punch, and poke. No mucking around for a sub-$11 rosé! Usually $10.95 per bottle
