Description
This is my favourite Riesling from the Grosset stable because it doesn’t take a decade to become attractive and you can chill it down hard in summer and it still looks fabulous. It’s a testament to the skill of Jeff Grosset that, if you read the reviews of “Alea” by people on Vivino, you see that many of them don’t even realise that there is a small amount of residual sugar in this wine and most, quite rightly, just see it as the delicious, flavoursome, and mouth-filling wine (with an electric finish!) that it emphatically is. To begin with it’s all ripe Riesling fruit on the nose, lime marmalade, ginger, and lemon myrtle, and that leads you into an immediately seductive palate that floods the mouth with flavour and satisfaction before the acidity kicks in on the end. This new 2024 vintage scored 94/100 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:
The 2024 Alea Riesling is velvety soft in the mouth, subtly focused and spicy. The residual sugar here holds the fruit in gently cupped hands and ushers it across the palate on downy, padded feet. This is a wine of persistence and finesse—gorgeous. 94 points wine advocate.
